Discover Your Daily CBD mg Strength

How much CBD should you take in a day? Proper CBD dosage depends on the CBD mg strength of the product, as well as your body chemistry, effects preferences, and many other factors.
You may need to experiment with various products, doses, consumption methods, and potencies to find what works best. This handy guide should help you to make an informed decision on the ideal CBD strength of your oils.
This article is meant to be a quick crash-course on CBD mg strength and dosage. For a more in-depth look at finding the right CBD strength for you, check out our comprehensive guide to CBD dosage.
Understanding CBD Oil Strength
In order to select the right CBD mg strength, first, you need to know how potency is measured. On most CBD oil products, you’ll see two measurements: mg (milligrams) and ml (milliliters). Milligrams refers to the concentration of CBD in the bottle, and milliliters refers to the size of the bottle itself.
While you may assume that determining the CBD mg strength is as easy as looking at the number of milligrams in the bottle, it’s important that you also consider the bottle size when determining potency and dosage. Let us explain how to calculate the strength of tincture bottles.
For example, say you have a 100 mg 15 ml bottle and a 200 mg 30 ml bottle. Those are both the same strength — they’re just different size bottles. A 1 ml CBD dose from either will contain a 6.66 ml CBD dose. However, a 500 mg 60 ml bottle would be slightly stronger because there’s a higher concentration of CBD relative to the amount of total liquid, delivering an 8.33 mg CBD dose with every ml.
The first two bottles would have a concentration of 6.66 mg per ml, whereas the 60 ml bottle would have a concentration of 8.33 mg per ml. To figure out the CBD mg strength, divide the bottle’s mg by its ml. In the above example: 100 mg ÷ 15 ml = 6.66 milligrams per milliliter.
When you’re determining the CBD mg strength for you, it’s also important that you know the size of the tincture dropper. For instance, you could have one oil that’s twice the potency of another, but if its dropper is also half the size of the other, one dropper-full of each is going to be the same strength. While most CBD tinctures come with 1 ml droppers, variations do exist!
Choosing the Right CBD MG Strength
Now that you understand how CBD concentration is measured, you may be wondering which is right for you and how much CBD you can take in a day. The answer varies depending on your tolerance, effect preferences, and body chemistry as a whole. Many users take a much higher CBD strength than others, so it’s up to you to see what works.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started:
Most existing research agrees that a daily dose of at least 25mg CBD is necessary for noticeable benefits. Most users divide up their daily CBD intake into several doses, spread-out throughout the day.
For an individual dose, these CBD strength guidelines may be helpful:
- Low: 7.5mg/per ml – Ideal for minor stress and/or minor aches and pains.
- Medium: 15mg/per ml – Ideal for moderate stress/pain or for digestive problems/inflammation
- High: 40+mg/ per ml – Ideal for intense pain/stress, sleeping disorders, and chronic pain
CBD is safe to take in higher quantities, so you may want to take more if you’re not experiencing your desired effects. According to a 2017 clinical review on the safety of CBD over extended periods, CBD was generally safe for continuous use, even at a total daily amount of CBD as high as 1,500mg.
Some (typically mild) side effects are possible:
- Fatigue
- Diarrhea
- Changes in weight and appetite
As with most things in life, it’s always smart to start with a low dose strength of CBD and work your way up gradually.
Why Are You Taking CBD: The Goal Changes the Ideal CBD Strength
A 2017 clinical review observed that, while research had not reached a consensus, it seems that daily CBD strengths of 20-40mg were best for “promot[ing] and maintain[ing] health, including antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotection effects[, . . .] as a neuroprotective antioxidant and can ameliorate skin conditions such as acne.”
At high doses (ranging up to 1,500mg in some of the reviewed studies), CBD was better suited for a “variety of conditions ranging in psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and dementia, as well as diabetes and nausea.”
Personal Factors Affect Ideal CBD Dosage
All users will react a little differently to the strength of CBD they take. The main cause for this is differences in individual biochemistry, physiology, and the severity of their symptoms.
The most important personal factors that affect CBD dosage are as follows:
- Your height
- Your weight
- Your experience with and tolerance for CBD
- The medical conditions you’re trying to treat
- The severity of your symptoms
Other physiological factors may also come into play, but the above factors are by far the most common. In general, larger people, people with severe symptoms, and people with heightened tolerance will likely need a higher CBD dosage.
Different CBD Ingestion Methods Affect Proper CBD MG Strength
Another important factor is the type of CBD product you take. The body absorbs different types of CBD products at different rates due to a physiological phenomenon known as bioavailability. Of all CBD products, CBD vapes are absorbed the most efficiently, while CBD edibles tend to be least efficient. If you switch from a CBD product with high bioavailability to one with low bioavailability, the CBD mg strength of your dose should also change accordingly.
