What is CBD Gum, and Is It Worth the Hype?

CBD gum is one such product.

What is CBD Gum?
As its name so clearly suggests, CBD gum is a type of traditional bubble or chewing gum with an added cannabidiol (CBD) infusion. As with any CBD edible, CBD gum is taken by mouth. Unlike traditional edibles, but like conventional(non-CBD) gum, it is meant to be chewed but not swallowed.
As with any CBD-infused product, CBD gum can offer a host of therapeutic benefits. The most well-researched and understood include:

- Reducing anxiety

- Improving sleep
- Reducing the frequency and severity of seizures and other symptoms of epilepsy
Is Hemp Oil Gum the Same Thing?
You may also be aware of another, very similar sounding product: “hemp oil gum”. While hemp oil and CBD are, in some situations, synonymous, hemp oil gum may not be identical to CBD gum — and may not offer the same potential benefits.
While CBD gum is made with a hemp plant extract featuring cannabidiol (whether full spectrum, broad spectrum, or CBD isolate), “hemp oil” gum may be made with a form of hemp extract that does not contain CBD or any other cannabinoids. Most commonly, that’s hemp seed oil, which is (predictably) made from the seeds of hemp plants rather than fully developed hemp. Such products contain only the smallest trace amounts of hemp compounds and will not deliver the therapeutic benefits of CBD.
Is CBD Gum Just Another CBD Edible? Yes and No
While, strictly speaking, CBD gum is a form of CBD edible, it bears one striking dissimilarity from others in this category — a difference that may make it more effective for some users.
Unlike virtually all other edibles, CBD gum is absorbed, at least in part, sublingually (meaning under the tongue). Sublingual absorption is one of the most efficient methods of dosing CBD or other substances due to the high-density of capillaries under the tongue, which gives CBD a direct line into the bloodstream.
Although CBD gum is not held under the tongue, chewing on it releases the CBD extract into your saliva. If held in the mouth before swallowing, this “CBD spit” can be far more rapidly and efficiently absorbed, increasing your dose’s bioavailability and effectiveness.
By contrast, traditional CBD gummies and other edibles must be swallowed and digested before their CBD content can take effect. This process subjects the CBD to “first-pass elimination”, which reduces the concentration and, as a result, the dose's effectiveness.
As a result, CBD gum may be more effective than other CBD edibles. However, the difference is unlikely to be significant; after all, most users will simply swallow their CBD-infused saliva, which will subject the dose to first-pass elimination and make its efficacy more akin to that of other edibles or beverages.
Of course, CBD gum also tends to have lower potency than many other CBD edibles. As a result, CBD gum’s effectiveness is something of a mixed bag, offering higher theoretically higher bioavailability than a traditional edible but at a lower overall dose.
