Cannabis produces a multitude of compounds known as cannabinoids, but there is debate among the scientific community as to how many are actually contained within the plant. Some estimates place the cannabinoid count in the dozens while others claim as high as 120.
Luckily, however, there are two major cannabinoids that are easily identifiable: Cannabidiol (CBD) and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
It’s important to recognize the differences – and similarities – between these two cannabinoids in order to identify which cannabinoid may be right for your specific needs.
1. CBD Is Non-Psychoactive
THC is famed for its psychoactive effects, feelings of euphoria and an altered consciousness. Following recent legalization efforts nationwide, recreational THC consumption has skyrocketed around the country, but that’s not to say THC doesn’t possess a range of therapeutic properties as well.
CBD, on the other hand, is non-psychoactive. This means that CBD users will not feel “high” as when consuming THC. Pure CBD Oil is strictly therapeutic as a substance and is associated with general well-being rather than recreational consumption.
CBD can also some of the exact same potential benefits as THC, with some recent studies examining whether or not CBD was the proponent of these therapeutic properties within cannabis in the first place.
If you are weighing the benefits of trying CBD or THC, you should know what each has to offer. The psychoactive properties of THC, while causing euphoric feelings in some users, may also cause anxiety in others.
2. Common Uses of THC and CBD
CBD also offers many of these benefits but has been linked to interactions with more receptors throughout the body. Clinical trials are underway to understand how CBD could potentially be used to treat anxiety, depression, chronic pain, seizures and even acne.
There is certainly overlap in the properties of CBD and THC. Both can be used for similar treatments, as their chemical makeups are similar in nature. Perhaps the most important difference is that CBD keeps your mind clear while THC commonly induces intoxicating effects.
As you can see, there is some overlap. The two cannabinoids can be used to help treat the same conditions, as their chemical makeup is very similar. The key difference is that CBD keeps you clear-headed.
3. Differences in Legality
The medical marijuana debate around the country is intensifying every year, with more and more states jumping on the THC bandwagon by overturning decades of local prohibition efforts against the substance.
Marijuana – and therefore THC – is legal both medical and recreational in 10 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. Furthermore, THC is medically legal in 30 additional states.
But where does CBD fit into the legality debate?
There are two classifications of cannabis to be aware of when considering CBD legality: hemp and marijuana. Hemp-derived CBD is legal in all 50 states, while marijuana-derived CBD is illegal at the federal level, like THC.
However, marijuana-derived CBD legality differs state-by-state. Some states allow for purchase, possession and consumption. Other states like Iowa, for example, marijuana-derived CBD can only be used medically and only if the CBD oil meets a restriction of 3% or less THC.
5. Consumption Methods
Both CBD and THC can be consumed in similar forms. With CBD, Pure CBD Oil is extracted from cannabis and then combined with a binding agent to enhance the effects. This Pure CBD Oil is used in tinctures, edibles, topicals and vape juices, as is similar with THC.
THC differs in that users can smoke the cannabis plant to obtain the effects. The same cannot be said for CBD.
