CBD oil for pets has become a mainstay commodity for pet lovers everywhere. It’s no secret that CBD works by interacting with the endocannabinoid system, but did you know that our feline friends and canine companions have endocannabinoid systems of their own? In fact, CBD Oil allows pets to produce more natural cannabinoids within this system, also giving them the nutritional benefits of CBD.
CBD Oil For Pets is a supplement extracted from the cannabis plant. CBD pet products commonly use “Full Spectrum” CBD Oil, a type of oil derived from whole-plant extractions. These products contain a wide variety of natural, valuable cannabinoids and terpenes, not just CBD, because they are taken from the entire plant.
Additionally, THC – the psychoactive compound found in cannabis – has been completely removed for the sanctity of our animal companions. Your pets will not experience any of the psychoactive effects associated with cannabis, meaning they can experience all the remedial properties without the “high.”
DOES CBD OIL FOR PETS HAVE ANY OTHER INGREDIENTS?
CBD Oil For Pets comes in a variety of products. We offer CBD Oil Tinctures for both cats and dogs, but we also carry everything from CBD Treats and CBD Soft Chews to CBD No-Rinse Conditioner.
Because CBD is non-binding in nature, these products include organic binding agents that allow your pets to experience the full effects of CBD. Fractioned coconut oil (MCT) is a common binding agent in CBD Oil For Pets because it is both healthy and safe for animal consumption. According to Aly Semigran at petMD, “Coconut oil can aid dogs with everything from itchy or bumpy skin to digestion issues.”
Our CBD Oil For Pet products also include natural flavors that your pets will love! Products come in bacon and peanut butter varieties for dogs, and salmon flavor for cats. We also carry flavors that both dogs, cats, and other animals will enjoy, including chicken and beef. Of course, you can always get an unflavored CBD Tincture for your pets if that’s what you prefer.

IS IT SAFE FOR PETS TO TAKE CBD OIL?
Yes, it is safe for pets to take CBD Oil. CBD plays off the natural cannabinoid receptors found in the endocannabinoid system (ECS) of all mammals, pets included. The ECS also produces internal cannabinoids that are similarly structured to CBD.
CBD binds to the receptors found within the ECS, and to other receptors found throughout the body. Users reports pain-relieving properties when taking CBD, and there’s reason to believe CBD affects animals similarly to humans.
While CBD research is still developing, early studies conclude that CBD may be helpful in addressing animal discomforts and improving the overall wellness of your pets.
WHAT ARE THE REASONS TO TRY GIVING CBD TO PETS?
Pet lovers report a variety of reasons for giving CBD to their furry companions. Some have pets with chronic pain and want to alleviate their animal’s symptoms. Others believe CBD soothes anxiety in their pets.
There are also pet owners who just want their pets to have a better quality of life. Our pets – especially dogs – possess high amounts of energy, and are almost guaranteed to developed muscle and joint pain over time due to the constant strain on their bone structure.
Research is underway to fully determine the relationship between CBD and alleviating muscle pain and inflammation in animals, but early results are promising.
Whatever your reasoning, CBD can provide an array of beneficial properties. It’s important to understand your pets’ needs in order to provide them with the right CBD products.
WILL PETS GET “HIGH” AFTER TAKING CBD?
No, pets do not get “high” from taking CBD. Although CBD is derived from cannabis – the same plant responsible for marijuana – CBD Oil contains only trace amounts of THC, the chemical responsible for creating this high in marijuana users.
In CBD pet products, however, the trace amounts of THC are completely removed from the CBD Oil. These products do not produce any kind of psychoactive state in our animals. At CBD Choice, all of our pet products are 100% THC-Free.
IS THERE A WAY TO KNOW WHAT PRODUCTS ARE RIGHT FOR CERTAIN PETS?
Each and every pet is unique, meaning there’s no concrete algorithm for determining which products are right for every one of our furry friends. However, there are certain things to keep in mind as a pet owner if you’re deciding which products to give your precious pets.
For example, pets with experience in taking oral medications will be more responsive to CBD Oil Tinctures than pets with no oral medication experience. Likewise, elderly pets with weak teeth will not respond as well to CBD Soft Chews.
Pet owners often report that their pets respond best to CBD Treats. This is because our pets are already accustomed to receiving treats, and manufacturers align these tastes directly to popular pet flavorings, such as peanut butter for dogs and salmon for cats.
HOW MUCH CBD OIL SHOULD PETS TAKE?
The amount of CBD Oil a pet should take depends on their size. CBD Choice pet products present clear labels on every product, letting pet lovers know exactly how much their pets should take, eliminating confusion!
For CBD Oil Tinctures, dosage varies for small, medium, and large animals – amounts are usually measured in full or half droppers, with strengths ranging from 150mg CBD to 750mg CBD. What size is your dog?
• Small-Sized Dogs are recommended to take a half dropper per day • Medium-Sized Dogs are recommended to take between a half and full dropper per day • Large-Sized Dogs are recommended to take a full dropper or more each day
The amount of CBD you give your animals depends on the size of your pets and the product you are using. All pet products found at CBD Choice – including Treats and Soft Chews – display clear dosage information, printed right on the package. We want to ensure that your pets are getting the best CBD treatment, because we know how important our pets are!
HOW IS CBD OIL ADMINISTERED TO PETS?
CBD is administered to pets in a variety of ways, and it all depends on the product. CBD Tinctures, for example, are administered sublingual, meaning owners must drop the CBD Oil beneath their pet’s tongue.
CBD Treats, on the other hand, are administered like every other pet treat on the market: Just give them to your pet to chew and enjoy! Depending on the size or your pet, they should be given anywhere from half a treat to two full treats per day – Amounts vary by product, but clear package labels make sure you know exactly how many treats to give your pets!
Additionally, CBD Choice carries a range of CBD Topicals specifically designed for pet treatment. These include No-Rinse CBD Conditioner, Foaming Hemp Topical, and various other wellness products. These are applied directly to a pet’s outer coat.
IS THERE A WAY TO TELL IF PETS LIKE CBD?
Like any pet products, the best way to tell if a pet enjoys CBD is by observing their behavior after ingestion. The effects of CBD start working anywhere from 5 to 60 minutes after ingestion, depending on the size of the animal.
Many pet owners report seeing no noticeable difference in behavior after giving their pets CBD, but others report noticing calm, soothing effects. It all depends on your pet and why they’re taking CBD.
For pets with arthritis, chronic muscle or joint pain, or other health problems, a veterinarian can observe their pain before and after taking CBD to see how they react to the supplement.
IS CBD OIL GOOD FOR SENIOR OR DISABLED PETS?
Yes, CBD can provide a variety of benefits to senior or disabled pets. Senior pets traditionally suffer from chronic to severe pain, both in their muscles and joints. Veterinarians have noticed some interesting things about giving CBD to senior or disabled pets, but further study is still underway.
Many pet owners with elderly or disabled animals have tried giving CBD to their pets to try to counteract anything from mobility issues to arthritis.
It’s also important to note that various research studies are underway to further understand how CBD can play a role in pain management, but early results show that CBD “may be helpful in treating conditions like anxiety, pain, cancer, and arthritis” in animals.
IS CBD OIL SAFE FOR PUPPIES AND KITTENS?
Yes, CBD is safe for puppies, kittens, and other baby animals to ingest. Even in younger mammals, cats and dogs included, the ECS is already producing natural cannabinoids that help regulate nervous system functionality. Administering CBD to animals in this early stage of life is not harmful and could actually aid development of natural cannabinoid receptors, but research is still underway.
If you want to start your puppy or kitten on CBD, just be sure to read the dosage information labeled on the product’s packaging and follow all weight guidelines for administering the right amount of CBD to your pet.
HOW DOES CBD FOR PETS DIFFER FROM CBD FOR HUMANS?
There are quite a lot of similarities between CBD products meant for pets and CBD products meant for humans. In fact, the basic ingredients are the same: cannabidiol (CBD) and medium chain triglycerides (MCT coconut oil) or another organic binding agent, including hemp seed oil or hemp extract.
When it comes to the CBD, there is absolutely no difference between pet and human CBD. Both pet and human CBD products commonly make use of Full Spectrum CBD Oil, and both are processed in the same ways.
However, while CBD products meant for humans sometimes contain the federally-allowed 0.3% THC, the vast majority of CBD manufacturers remove the THC from their pet products.
But the major different between human and pet CBD Oil comes through the flavoring. CBD Oil For Pets often includes flavors that make them more enjoyable for animal consumption, while CBD Oil meant for humans includes flavors meant for human consumption.
Your cat or dog probably doesn’t want to consume a mint-flavored CBD Oil for the same reason you probably don’t want to consume their bacon-flavored CBD Oil.
CAN PETS TAKE CBD OIL MEANT FOR HUMANS?
Yes, pets can take CBD Oil meant for humans. However, pet lovers report that their animals respond better to CBD Oil that is targeted at animal ingestion.
Unflavored CBD Oil can be tart or bitter-tasting, depending on how it’s made. CBD Oil For Pets is flavored to ease the administration of CBD to your pets by offering flavors that your pets will actually enjoy.
Pet owners report that it is much easier to give their pups peanut butter or bacon-flavored CBD Oil over unflavored human varieties. Additionally, various human CBD Oils include flavors of their own, and pets often shy away from such palettes. These include anything from mint to fruity flavors – tastes not known for exciting animals.
However, the basic ingredients are the same. If you have an organic, unflavored CBD Oil that contains only CBD and MCT and is THC-free, you can administer this to your pets without worry.
WHAT DO VETERINARIANS SAY ABOUT CBD OIL FOR PETS?
A Vin News Service report in 2018 surveyed 2,131 veterinarians about CBD. Of those surveyed, 92 percent reported having patients who had asked about giving CBD to their pets, while a staggering 63 percent said they are asked at least once a month.
According to that same survey, “nearly 79 percent [of vets] indicated that the products were somewhat or very helpful as analgesics for chronic pain [in animals]; and more than 62 percent found them somewhat or very helpful for managing anxiety.”
Because CBD is still unregulated by the FDA, many U.S. states disallow veterinarians from directly suggesting the use of CBD to pet owners. However, more and more animal health professionals are beginning to observe the results from pets and CBD. According to the Vin News Service survey, “A great majority [of vets] – more than 80 percent – had not observed or received client reports of any adverse effects” in pets taking CBD.
