Liposomal Hemp Oil: What You Need to Know

Liposomal Hemp Oil: What You Need to Know

Liposomal hemp oil is a formulation of CBD oil, scientifically engineered to increase the absorption rate of CBD into your system. Liposomal oils enter your body through cell membranes, bypassing regular digestive system functions. Also called liposomal CBD oil, these products utilize CBD isolates to bring you the most effective CBD treatment.

Or so they say.

The liposomal delivery system is not exclusive to liposomal hemp oil and other CBD products. First coined in the mid-1960s, this delivery system is primarily used in cancer treatments. It's considered to be one of the most scientifically advanced drug delivery methods on the planet.

According to the National Cancer Institute, liposomes are defined as “a drug preparation that contains the active drug inside very tiny, fat-like particles. This form is easier for the body to absorb and allows more drug to get to the target area of the body, such as a tumor.”

In layman’s terms, any substance can utilize the liposomal delivery system so long as the active compounds of that substance are encased in a miniscule, fatty vesicle.

How to Make Liposomal CBD Oil (In Theory)

When talking about the CBD industry, CBD manufacturers could theoretically create liposomal hemp oils. Consider CBD isolates: these CBD products take the active ingredients of the hemp plant – cannabinoids – and restructure them into a concentrated form of CBD. But liposomal formulations take it one step further.

To manufacture a liposomal CBD oil, you would have to take the active ingredients of hemp or CBD isolate and capture the particles within a miniscule, artificial fat sac. Furthermore, liposomal technology has only gotten more advanced since the 1960s. Scientists have created “second-generation liposomes.” With these more advanced liposomes, scientists can modulate the composition, size, and charge of the vesicle entering the body.

Does the CBD Industry Really Have Liposomal Technology?

It’s hard to say.

There do exist some companies claiming to sell “liposomal hemp oil” or “liposomal CBD oil.” But because the CBD industry is currently unregulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), there’s no real testing procedure in place to confirm if a product has been created with liposomal delivery systems and absorption rates in mind.

It seems unlikely, however. Why? Because CBD is most effective when introduced to the part of the body that needs the most benefits from CBD in the first place. If you take CBD for mental health, for example, you’d probably want to ingest CBD oil sublingually, or beneath the tongue, as the CBD molecules would have a direct line to the nervous system. If you experience inflammation in your knees, however, you’d probably prefer using a CBD lotion or cream right on the area of inflammation.

Liposomal hemp oil might deliver a strong, technologically advanced dose of CBD to your system. But if the current delivery methods for CBD aren’t broken, why fix them, especially with a vastly higher price tag?

Taking liposomal CBD oil might help you bypass regular digestive system functions and introduce more CBD particles into your bloodstream. But traditional, sublingual CBD oils already do this. In addition, CBD is known to work best when interacting with the nervous system, not cell membranes. Liposomal delivery systems exclusively target cell membranes, which might be suitable for some CBD users but certainly not the majority of CBD users.

The Benefits of Liposomal Hemp Oil

We don’t want to come off like we’re anti-liposome technology. The liposomal delivery system offers a much higher absorption rate than other ingestion methods, meaning it might be the perfect product for CBD users with chronic or long-term conditions. When taking CBD products that must pass through the body’s digestive system – especially CBD edibles – your body has to break down a certain amount of the substance to properly ingest the active CBD molecules. Liposomal CBD oil, in theory, would dramatically reduce this breakdown, meaning more CBD gets into your system.

Furthermore, for those suffering from conditions that affect cell membranes, liposomal hemp oils could theoretically introduce CBD to the parts of the body that need it most. Conditions that affect cell membranes include:

  • Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH), Type II
  • Grave’s Disease
  • Hurler Syndrome
  • Morquio Syndrome
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • Muscular Dystrophy
  • Some Forms of Diabetes
  • Some Forms of Obesity

If you suffer from one of these conditions, liposomal technologies may be advantageous. But remember: the CBD industry might not yet be ready for liposomal delivery systems. The increased absorption rate and targeting of cell membranes might sound ideal, but not with the risks of taking an unregulated product from untrustworthy CBD manufacturers. We instead recommend taking CBD isolates, as these products have undergone appropriate third-party lab testing to ensure safety and efficacy.

Liposomal: Advanced Technology or Total Fib?

At CBD Choice, we believe in the current science of our industry. Liposomal hemp oil might sound great in theory, but until the CBD industry receives further regulatory measures from the FDA and other government organizations, there’s no way to trust that we’re actually getting authentic, liposomal CBD.

Stick to what you know. Like we said, the current delivery methods for CBD work, and there’s no need to fix what isn’t broken.
