CBD For Cats: Benefits & More

Cat owners may have already heard about CBD for cats—It provides our four-legged furballs with the tantalizing benefits of CBD! And there are many cat CBD products to go around. But first, let's learn what CBD cat treats and other pet-focused products can do for your feline family members.
Benefits of CBD For Cats
In 2019, the scientific journal Animals published an assessment on the benefits of CBD for cats. Note that Animals is an internationally recognized, open access, peer-reviewed journal devoted entirely to the science of animals. They determined that the use of CBD is "increasing in dogs and cats for disorders related to anxiety, seizures, cancer, and pain."
As part of the assessment, both cats and dogs were administered CBD oil over the course of 12 weeks. RESULTS: No changes were reported throughout physical examination, no changes were reported in complete blood count (CBC), and no changes were reported in serum chemistry parameters.
THIS IS ALL GOOD NEWS!
It means, physiologically, CBD seems to work well within cats and dogs. In fact, the only side effects noted by researchers were excessive licking and some head-shaking after administration, exclusive to cats only. These side effects seem minimal in comparison to the benefits of CBD.
Benefits of CBD (List)
In addition to the science listed above, your cats will experience a variety of benefits from CBD. Products like CBD cat treats have been known to:

- Reduce nausea-related symptoms
- Boost appetite
- Reduce symptoms from seizure disorders
- Lower pain, including chronic pain

Is CBD For Cats Veterinarian Recommended?
According to Dr. Gary Richter, a veterinarian and the owner-director of Oakland's Montclair Veterinary Hospital and Holistic Veterinary Care, CBD is generally safe for cats. In an interview with PetMD, Dr. Richter explained that some cats may have mild side effects while others experience none at all. But that's not what matters most. "The bigger issue, from a medical perspective, is making sure that animals are dosed appropriately."
While many vets agree with Dr. Richter, stating that CBD can be very beneficial for cats, many share the same dosing concerns. Dosage is different in animals than in humans. When taking CBD yourself, you can adjust the dose based on how you feel. However, cats can't just tell us how much is the right amount! Cat owners are responsible for reading their cat's body language and administering more or less CBD oil in response.
If you are unsure how much CBD to give your cat per dose, ask your vet! You can also start with the smallest dose possible (one drop from a CBD oil tincture, one small bite of a CBD cat treat, or one droplet of CBD topical) and increase incrementally until it seems your cats are receiving the most benefits.
Cat Owners: Are There Side Effects To Be Aware Of?
Remember the 12-week cat CBD study we talked about earlier, published in the journal Animals? Well, scientists determined that CBD seems to induce excessive licking in cats. Furthermore, they noted head shaking in cats after administration.
But what do others say about the side effects of CBD for cats? According to the ASPCA, other side effects may include:
- Lethargy
- Vomiting
- Lack of appetite
- Diarrhea
- Ataxia (stumbliness) - with large doses
If your cats are inexperienced with CBD products, keep an eye on them for a few afters after administration. If your cat has trouble with any of the side effects listed, reduce dose or stop use of CBD altogether.
Does Cat CBD Work Differently Than Human CBD?
Believe it or not, no! Both humans and cats possess an endocannabinoid system, known as the ECS for short. The ECS is found in our central nervous system and contains a plethora of endocannabinoid receptors, where CBD works its magic inside your body. The ECS was discovered by scientists in the 1990s, bridging a chemical gap between cannabinoids like CBD and our own homeostasis.
The discovery of the ECS only proves that humans possess a long, healthy history with cannabis plants, responsible for CBD, CBG, CBN, THC, and hundreds of other cannabinoids, all with their own health benefits. And the best part? All mammals have an ECS, not just humans!
When cats ingest CBD cat treats or other pet products, the CBD molecules travel through the bloodstream to the ECS, exactly like human CBD products. As long as it's mammalian, it has an ECS—As long as it has an ECS, it can experience the similar benefits of CBD enjoyed by me and you, cats included! This is why so many cat owners swear by CBD for cats, just another way to improve the lives of our furry four-legged companions.
